If you’re anything like me, you know everything about the fitness industry. Or so I thought. After spending some time doing my research, I was blown away by some facts about the fitness industry that threw me way off my game. Some good, some not so good, but all interesting and relevant if you’ve got a career, or aspire to have a career – in the fitness industry.
5 Things You Didn’t Know About the Fitness Industry
The number of gym memberships in the U.S. has grown 38% in the past 10 years.
That’s great news! According to research done by the IHRSA (International Health, Racquet and Sports club Association), the amount of memberships went from 41.5 million in 2006 to 53.7 million in 2016. (1)
Only 18% of Americans have a gym membership.
Although there has been significant growth in the industry the past 10 years, it barely touches the surface of the entire population of the U.S. As of this moment, the U.S population is 326,755,959 (and this number literally changed 3 times while I referenced it to type this blog). (2) With 53.7 million memberships, which seems to be a considerable number of people, it is still less than 1/5th of our entire population.
There are over 2x the amount of health clubs in the U.S. than there are McDonalds.
It’s true! Statistics show that there are 14,146 McDonalds stores in the U.S. (3), while there are a recorded 36,540 gyms. (4) Don’t get too excited, though. In total, there are almost ¼ million “fast food” chains, which means we still have some work to do!
Results Drive Retention.
22% of gym members say that they keep their membership so they can go to the group exercise classes. An additional 19% say that they keep their membership to meet with a personal trainer. It should be pretty evident that to take that 41% retention to 100%, hiring more trainers and implementing more classes is the way to go. With the expected growth of personal trainers by 2020 to be 31.7%, this shouldn’t be too hard. (5)
Only 5% of Americans go to the gym.
What?! Yes, I saved the worst for last. You are probably thinking back to #2, where we talked about the 18% gym members. Well unfortunately, only 33% of those people use their memberships. (6)
